New formation and maturation of human heart muscle cells
Heart failure is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The limited ability of the heart to replace damaged myocardium underlies this condition. We have shown that new cardiomyocytes are generated throughout life, not only during early development. However, their proliferative capacity is limited by the maturation process during the neonatal period. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the maturation of cardiomyocytes may improve the possibility of replacing them during cardiac therapy. This study aims to uncover these mechanisms, identify key transcriptional regulators and explore microenvironmental factors that enable proliferation. By studying cardiomyocyte renewal in diseased hearts, we hope to develop treatments for heart disease.
